Experts advice required for designing a relay based electric circuite

Hi All,

I know my requirement is very simple and basic stuff. I need an expert advice from you folks to select the best way to do this.

I would like to control an electric circuit (say an electric bulb) in the following way.

1. Need to control it using traditional electric switch (Two way switch ofcourse)
2. Plus using a relay/triac based controller (let's say an IR senser which is activating the relay and turning the light off/on depending on the physical switch status)

How can I sync both the physical switch and the relay? Can someone please suggest me a circuit. If you could help me in finding the components which can be used in this circuit, it would be more appreciated.

Please let me know if you need more details about my requirement.

You have three inputs to your circuit, switch1, switch2, dimmer. You must be explicit in what each item does, i.e. does the dimmer operate if both switches are off, or when both are on? or one on . . .?

Thank you very much for looking into my requirement.

Actually I have only two inputs to this circuit.

Switch 1 - Traditional Power Switch, which can turn ON or OFF the light as normal.
Switch 2 - A Relay based one, which I wanted to operate through either an IR remote or through a PC (possibly parallel port) . This switch also can be used to turn the same light ON or OFF.

I want these two switches to sync together and work like a two way switch.

I wanted to turn ON or OFF the light using any one of these switches. If I turned on the light using Switch 1, I wanted to turn it off using either switch 1 or switch 2. In the same way, If I turn it ON using switch 2, I wanted to turn it ON or OFF using Switch 1 also.

Thanks, that makes it clear.
To do the switching, you could use a SPDT relay like this one.

Controlling the relay with a PC parallel port would be simple electrically, but you'd have to do some programming to create the software needed.

Controlling it with an infrared remote would require more complicated electronics, but hopefully you could just buy ready-made modules for the receiver and transmitter.

You have shown a typical 2 way light switch circuit, unfortunately you have not said what your dimmer is meant to do. The alternatives I can think off are :-
1. A master dimmer, its in series with the bulb.
2. The dimmer is associated with ONE of the switches.
3. The dimmer overrides the switches and returns the control back to the switches, when it is turned off.
4. The dimmer takes control from the existing switches (with another switch) and can return the control when the dimmer switch is operated.
5. Any other?

This is what I was looking for. I can do the programming part in the parallel port way. But I don't have much idea in the relay stuff.

Would you be able to direct me in proper way so that I can make the simple electrical circuit using relay by myself? How the circuit looks like, and what all are the components required etc etc.

First of all sorry to make you confused with the dimmer part. Actually I don't want to use a dimmer. I just need two switches. I know my initial description about the requirement made you confused. I am really sorry for that and very much thankful for the time you spend for me.
