Embeded Linux -- How to choose?

Hi,
I want to build a router using linux with one WAN port and 4 LAN ports using Intel XScale[ARM] processor. Can you suggest which embeded linux to start with. Should I start with kernel.org, I see a lot of embedded linux flavors... I need help to identify one
