* Electrical contact tabs acquire tarnish as time goes by, just sitting in the air. Examine any contact you can put your eyes on, use a magnifying glass. Clean away, sand away, use steel wool, fingernail file, etc., on any dingy copper you find.
* Another holdup could be low initial voltage on your battery. Some smart chargers do not begin charging unless it detects a battery whose voltage is in a certain range. Your battery is probably depleted after a year idle. You may need to apply a few volts to it manually for a while, just to bring up battery voltage so it gets recognized.
