I have to automate the function of a potentiometer. Can anyone tell me some most commonly used digital potentiometers which are easily available in market
 

What are your voltage and current requirements ?
Keep in mind that usually digital potentiometer ICs cannot withstand more than a few mA or voltages above their own supply.
 

Another method we commonly use is using a PWM controller with a power FET + FET driver. You use a rotary encoder and a microcontroller, you can use one with integrated PWM outputs. This works for very large loads and also rather durable if made well. If the loads aren't too large you can also use the FET driver directly to steer the load. Obviously this only works well for loads that allow for PWM. Another fun variant I've seen on several occasions is using a DA converter + power regulator with a sense pin. By applying a certain voltage to the sense circuit (where depends on the regulator obviously) you can control the output voltage fairly easily. It gives superior stability and a very clean output. Combined with the fact that you'll have at least 2^8 possible output levels so you'll have quite some room to play with.
