Digital Down Converter Help

I am a Junior in College (ECE & CS major) & I need to design a digital down converter for a Radio Satellite Project I am working on (for my University). Can anyone give me some advice on where to start (hard to find material on this subject from what I've tried so far) and what is the best way to implement this (i.e. if microprocessors, what chip would recommend looking into?).
