Differences in implementing designs in Asic and FPGA

Hello Everybody,

where does the primary difference comes while implementing the design in ASIC or FPGA? other than the technology mapping what else should be taken care, do any synthesis tool support the technology mapping of ASIC's TSMC or Chartered Libraries or else we have to go for the semi custom. i will be helpful regarding this

fpga vs asic

Unlike ASICs, FPGA's have special hardwares inbuilt, which u cud make use to get better performace... for eg Block-RAM,DCM modules,MACs etc..

u can design compiler for synthesis

It all depends on what u want out of your hardware . Genrally when designing is FPGA u need to take some special care for making sure your synthesis engine takes the required parts from the fpga . well asic also gives u the liberty of having a lot of logic b/w the flops and yet perform at high speeds . Even when we compare the FPGA with the gate arrays . the gate array are much faster , remember that in gate array cell placements cann't be changed only the metal connections can be routed . Ofcourse u will gain much speed with asics . Other problem with fpga is the power comsumed . FPGA by default eat up too much of power ..
I may be biased towards asics because i am a asic designer may be some one who works on fpga s can find some points where fpga score over asics (apart from price ) which I am sure there are !! :)
 

asic fpga difference

ASIC is the application specificate intergrated circiut, the all circiut and the functions be fixed in the chip after design or manufacture.
FPGA is the field programable gate arrays, the base gates and the base celles are fixed , BUT the connection between the cells are the optionable,the function be achieve untill the programming.

FPGA sythesis is much more easier than ASIC.
In FPGA synthesis tool, like Synplify, you just specify FPGA vendor and model of the chip, than done !

FPGAs are good for prototyping and limited production.

If you are going to make 100-200 boards it isn't worth to make an ASIC

However, if you are going for volumes and competitive pricing you have to go
ASIC.


FPGA have a lot of built-in features to take advantage of, such as memories
and highspeed I/O, embedded CPU..
So, the differences are when you try to take advantages of these features.
Clock trees are almost totally automatic in FPGA which saves a lot of hassle

The major diff is, when ever ther is need of the achiving the high frequencies and needs to be the large scale application then ASIC works out better, but if there is few pieces requiered then FPGA, and needs lots of flexiblity or for the modelling purpose FPGA suits better

FPGA is not efficient in speed, area and power and it has special memory(dual port), multiplier and clock tree. So, after prototyping, you need to change them.

asics vs fpgas

There are too many methods to make ourself ASIC.
Gate array is one of all methods.
It is almost the same as FPGA, and there is a shortest time to market.
Although it is a little hard than FPGA.
But if you have to make ASIC for a short time, you can consider this good approach.

There are several differences - ASIC vs FPGA
1. In ASIC you worry about DSM issues. In FPGA you don't (vendor takes care of it)
2. In ASIC you can implement analog ckt. Not in FPGA
3. ASIC are faster than FPGA
4. FPGA no NRE (and tools are cheap). ASIC you pay huge NRE and tools are expensive.
5. In ASIC you have to verify (simulate or emulate or equivalency checking) at so many stages - pre-synthesis, post-synthesis, post P&R. In FPGA you do it once after post-layout and then incircuit.
6. In FPGA you often don't do floor-planning (tool does it often efficiently). In ASIC you have do it.
7. FPGA has lots of Macros, built in Architecture modules, DCM etc etc.
8. Important in ASIC you insert DFT, in FPGA you rarely do that.

Nowadays we are hearing about structured asics, and offcourse xilinx and altera would be into these structured asics, what actually is this and how far is it different from Asics and fpga's and what r its most important features, overall why structured asics?

reusability of FPGA is the advantage.. after ur actual design till the simulation u can try the post simulation on an FPGA which wud give almost accurate results so that it can be implemented on an ASIC. then comes the question of the money which ur willin to spend on developin an ASIC.. larger volumes of sucessful ASIC design proves to be cheaper than manufacturin a single FPGA as each design on an FPGA shud be fused under specific product.

Limited expandability dependin on the avilable design is another drawback.. but most people/companies are developing FPGA which match the speeds and performance of ASICs.. the latest are the lattice and XILINIX vertix series of FPGAs which is a perfect ASIC replacement.
some FPGAs are reconfigurable (partically and dynamically) so in other words this is another advantage of FPGAs over ASICs.. design re-usability! and various other advantages of using an FPGA over ASIC..
well pipelinin and other stuff depends on ur design and the compiler which ur using to arrange ur instrautions.. i wud say if ever ur designin an ASIC and u wud to implement it with tapeouts, u better test ur design on an FPGA so that u can verify for almost accurate results and for design correctness after which u can continue with ur actual backend design using tools ( u shud be aware of magma and cadence SoC encounter and Nano-encounter) this wud always help u for a better and efficient design over existing design

i wud suggest u give a shot at magma (MDA) for ur RTL to GDSII integrated format..so that u can understand the basic design flow..
