1. GSM uses TDMA technology with narrowband 200Khz. To make a call, each user must occupy a frequency. This is reason of interference as well as limited frequency resource during frequeny planning when expanded coverage.
2. 3G (WCDMA) use CDMA technology with broadband 5Mhz, the same frequency carrier, time and division following code. Hence, the speed is increased as well as intererence of frequency do not happen.

@ ironheart: Using CDMA doesn't mean its 3G, CDMA 1x is still 2G
Here is my answer,
Simple, 2G has low data rate, voice oriented services
3G has higher data rate and data oriented services
This I believe is the biggest difference between 2G & 3G
The bandwidth at which they operate is also different.
the main difference is a speed! please read only 3G&4G parts of this thesis.
