Is there any software that can detect a PIC chip's type

I have what I know to be a PIC chip but it has no markings

Thanks in advance

Every PIC have DeviceID area that can be read even chip is code-protected. Just conect ICSP to programmer and use device identyfication option.
BTW how many pins has it?

more info

i have a picstart plus programmer and mplab software

what software do i need ?

can this be done with my programmer ?

I dont know any software that will work with picstart, maybe some kind software that can work with JDM compatible programmer can read whole configuration area (especially device ID). Why do You need to know what model of processor is it?

If this pic is working in a circuit you can try to know the function of each pin and try to know its type according to that.. from the special pins like XTL and VCC and GND ...the I/O ports ... the serial interface
and compare what you know by what is available from the pic families
It needs some effort but i think you can made it that way or at least know exactly the target family
