DC supply / Battery -> Motor runs only one direction

Hi,

Im new to electronics.

I have this arm: http://www.velleman.co.uk/manuals/ksr10.pdf and I connected it to a small DC powersupply. Now what I dont understand is, why the motors are going only in one direction. If I switch the current, the motors are going in the other direction only. Why is this?

The direction of the motor is due to the interaction of the fixed magnetic field and the magnetic field in the armature (rotating part) which is caused by your current flow. So you reverse the current and the direction of the motor reverses.

In this case I connected the DC power supply to the batterywires and I thought it would behave like a battery,wouldnt it?
 

This may happen, due to disturbance in current flow.
