DC-DC Step-down and on/off switching options

Hi,

I have a circuit that includes a UPS created using a LT1513 and a LTC1142, with a 12V supply in, and a small SLA 12V battery. The output of this ranges from 12V up to 16V. I may have some issues in that circuit (described here), but wanted to understand what my options were for regulating power to a clean 12V, 9V, and 5V.

I realise there are a number of options out there - LM317, MC34063, etc, but I'm struggling to understand what the best option is now, especially as newer/better things may have come along. I'm a bit confused about the ins/outs of bucks, LDOs, etc. Is there a good and current guide somewhere for beginners? I can't find one...

Basically, I need:
- high efficiency
- filtering and low enough noise to suit a DS1307 that I seem to be having problems with, and an arduino, and a beagleboard
- 12V@ 1A
- 9V @ 1A (could be stepped down from 12V)
- 5V@ 1-1.5A (could be stepped down from 9V)

On a related point, I need one switch to be able to cut power to several points on my circuit at 9V and 5V. I tried to have a separate switched ground, but that failed miserably. I would like to avoid a relay if possible, but if I had to do that would want to use a very simple/compact optical/solid state option. What's the best way to attack this?
