[SOLVED] Custom Toroidal Transformer

Hello All...

I require a custom Toroidal transformer for an experiment...

Frequency 60 Hz

input: 18Vac / 100 watts

Output: 2,450Vac / 200 mW

Can I just purchase any 100 watt Toroidal and rewind it to 136:1 ( assuming the windings fit? )

No that won't work. Do you know how to compute/simulate your primary peak current with no load vs L1:L2?

The turns ratio is far too high for 1:136

You might want to look at a flyback boost circuit.

No, I haven't researched that far.

I was hoping for the easy ( lazy🤪 ) solution.

I did notice that blank cores can cost more than completed transformers,
and are harder to source.

Your power specification (100 W pri/200 mW sec) makes no sense. I wonder how you got there? Making a 50/60 Hz transformer with kV secondary voltage is possible of course, but toroidal design is least favourable for high voltage, I believe. I would rather expect a standard M or EI core shape. Consider proper winding insulation to handle the voltage.

We don't know the application, if it's constrained to a low frequency transformer and AC output?

I really don't know much about transformers other than choosing off the shelf models that fulfill my voltage and current requirements.

What i meant was I have a 18vac 5.5 amp supply, and I need approx 2400 volts @ approx 100 ma

If I have to learn transformer design to get there, I will.

Please don't be offended.

We all have to start somewhere.

what you can do is get hold of a few 12V to 230V small transformers, say
11 in this case, you can then run the 12V wdgs from a variac, in series you need a variac that goes to 130Vac, the outputs of the small transformers can be series aiding connected to get 11 x 230 Vac = 2530 max no load - be careful

He is not angry. But you must correct errors.

Your #1 Q says Output: 2,450Vac / 200 mW
Now you say 2400 volts ... 100 mA = 2.4 kW

But you must let us know if you made a typo error or are changing requirements which ought to include purpose.

For low power HV I suggested an autotransformer.
For DIY HV with more power search for MOT HV on youtube (microwave oven transformer , rewired.) Do it yourself (DIY)
