Hello,
What is the correct symbol/marking to use outside a casing for a connection to a DC adapter (so the user know where to connect a DC adapter)?

You should use the standard symbol with the circle attached to a line and a semicirce attached to a line with the respective polaritys at the end of the line. Most adapters and devices that use them have this symbol. Also the device should be marked with the voltage and max current requirements.
