control fan thru micro controller

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask question relating to micro controller, arduino. I would like to use an arduino to control the fan (computer fan). It needs about 5 volt and 0.7amp to turn on. If i use the arduino, the output port does not have that much of current. Please advise where can I get more current to power on the computer fan.

Hi,

Its not that difficult, you need to use relay. Provide the actuating signal from Arduino to relay and give direct 5V to output of relay. Now when you provide ON signal from Arduino then the relay will get ON and provide 5V to the fan otherwise it will remain OFF. Relay is simply acting like a switch.

As relay is a simple mechanical switch so its a bit slow but still okay for your case, if you wanna use quick way of switching then use mosfets like 75n75.

you can use a relay, or transistor or mosfet.

relay has the disadvantage of consuming more power [when on] and taking up more space

transistor compared to mosfet consumes a little more power, but far less than a relay

if you only want to turn it on, then you can use a SCR
