combining HC11 with RS485

HC11 + RS485

HELLO GUYS
NEED HELP ON COMBINING THE RS485 WHT HC11
I M TRYING TO MAKE A NETWORK WITH MULTIPLE HC11 uC.
I DONT WANT TO USE THE SPI BECAUSE I THINK IT WILL NOT BE GOOD OVER LONG DISTANCES (???IS THAT TRUE), PLUS I WANT TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WTH OTHER PERIPHERALS THAT USE THE STANDARD RS485
SO IF ANYBODY HAVE SOME LINKS OR SOMETHING TO OFFER I WOULD BE REALLY GREATFUL
