Hi,
Why do people use special sealed connectors for connecting wire for 12v, 2A?....if its just connecting wire end to wire end...why does it need to be waterproof?....surely a bit of silicone
over the metal after soldering is all thats needed..then a bit of heatshrink over the join?

Surely you are right. It is nothing more than connecting wires end to end.

What is a just a soldering two wire for a DIYer, is a matter of time, service and efficiency when you consider the assembly line.

Sometimes replacing the complete unit is more cost-effective than servicing a non-functional unit.

For example, replacing a street light may be more expensive compared to the light unit itself.

But I do not understand the silicone part: why do you need a bit of silicone over the metal?

if it is a connector; is meant to be disconnected at some point, for maintenance, replacement, measurement, troubleshooting. Using sealant eliminates that feature or complicates restoring the feature at re-connecting.
Connector is one thing; what you meant covering in silicone may yes, be a plain cheap wire splice.
