CHEAP IRDA

I've seen some of the chips by HP and Maxim that turns IRDA, at the hardware level, into something a serial port can understand. Does anyone know of a real cheap solution to do HArdware-only IRDA? I don't need any of the protocols...

Hi,
Take a look at

IRDA

Quotes from datasheets:

Maxim:
MAX3130/31 3V to 5.5V, IrDA Infrared Transreceiver with Integrated RS-232 Interface

Texas Instruments :
TUSB3410, RS232/IrDA Serial-to-USB Converter

an app. note about MSP430 and IRDA:

Texas :
TIR1000, TIR1000I STANDALONE IrDAE ENCODER AND DECODER
The TIR1000 serial infrared (SIR) encoder/
decoder is a CMOS device which encodes and
decodes bit data in conformance with the IrDA
specification.
A transceiver device is needed to interface to the photo-sensitive diode (PIN) and the light emitting diode (LED).
A UART is needed to interface to the serial data lines.

Intersil:
TOIM 3232
