In the OrCAD CIS 16.6 database example one can find two DB fields called Allegro_PCB_Footprint and Layout_PCB_Footprint. Both fields are populated with different footprint names, and I assume, must refer to two different footprint files.

Why two different fields ?
Why OrCAD uses two different ways of representing a footprint ?

Experimentation lead me to find that my Capture CIS footprint viewer window will link to the Allegro instead of Layout footprint field.
Yet, isn't Layout an OrCAD application ?
What is the difference between the two ways of representing a footprint ?
Why is Allegro_PCB_Footprint the default footprint identifier instead of Layout_PCB_Footprint.
Basically, what is the difference between the two ?

Appreciate your help

I am not an OrCAD DB expert, but I think that, prior to 16.4 or so, the OrCAD PCB Editor (both standard and Pro versions) was a separate product and not fully compatible with the Allegro flagship product version. They are now all capable of working with/opening each others' designs (though the PCB Editor Pro still doesn't have all the upper end Allegro features, it will still open the design file and let you do what it can). So, my thinking is that it is for backward compatibility reasons, and being able to import/convert older DB designs. But again, this is only my hypothesis.

Given your answer should I understand that I may be better to concentrate my future work on adopting the Allegro_PCB_Footprint field and kind of forget about the Layout_PCB_Footprint ?
