Texas' TMS320 series are DSP cores with MCU's capabilities (as is said in TI's site) so can i use it instead of a ordinary microcontroller just to gain on processing time?

Re: tms320

I think so, u may gain on processing time but the price will increase also....

Probably... i think so, get some application notes from TI's site for more information

The processing will be highly increased

Re: tms320

It all depends on your application. If your application needs a lot of addition and/or multiplication, then using a DSP will increase processing power a lot. If it's more about managing I/Os and communication, it won't do much difference.

Re: tms320

YES DEFINITLY YES the cheaper C2400 family is worth of replacing other cpus (arms ,51s pics ,etc). It is not as expensive as you might think .see digikey to have an idea (digikey is not cheap ).The C2000 family is powerful. It has a lot of peripherals and power consumption can be tuned.
what has happened is that MCU had gone up in performance and dsp had gone down in price and become stand alone controllers .Somewhere both had to meet .
And they did ! Now you can see any of these DSPs in the high end MCU hunting ground or the other way around .
other reason why people might not be yet using dsp for embedded standart aplications is the "AURA" of complexity of dsps And may be the cost of tools .
there are now lots of ports of commun embedded open applications to high end DSPs ( Os , tcp/ip stacks, web servers ,and even GUIs)
But i say yes........ "Is time to use dsp for more than to do DSP!"

Re: tms320

yes. but it is difficult to work such as microcontrolers.
you don't have any port,timer,ADC,watch dog,... .
