hey guys, I'm designing a MCU based control circuit to control a machine which employ a 230V 1000W HID lamp. the lamp is connected through a magnetic ballast and a ignitor. these lamps are dimmable and normally dimmed by disconnecting the 1000W ballast and connecting a 400W ballast with in a fraction of a second.

Will I be able to dim this lamp using a TRIAC phase control circuit?? then I will be able to eliminate the low power (400W in this case) ballast and keep the lamp constantly connected to 1000W ballast. and also I will be able to achieve smooth and step-less dimming and have a better lamp control via MCU.

Thanx
