Can a CD writer write DVDs in data format?

Hi

I got a silly doubt. Please let me clear in this.

Normally the writable CDs available in market are VCDs (standard size is 700MB). But we can use then as data CDs for writing data other than video.

In the same way, DVDs (standard size is approx. 4.35GB). Is it possible to use these disks for writing data files using normal CD writer. We may not be able to write video in DVD format. But writing data is possible. I think so.

Anyone tried?

one common question is how any of these DVD formats varies from the writeable CD formats. Although DVD and CD media and drives have the same form factor (media size and shape), that's where the similarities end. DVD media has at least seven times the capacity of CD media — a feat partially accomplished by using multiple recording layers and recording on both sides of the media. The write method also helps boost the capacity of DVD.

Any burner can copy data to RW DVD

Thanks a lot.

Can you give me some more details of this feature. Now I am using LG CD RW with my PC working under Windows XP operating system.

Normally we can format the disks in FAT/FAT32/NTFS file system under windows environment. Then how can I format in UDF file system?

Now I am using Nero Express6.0v for writing normal CDs.

Please let me know whether any other software tools or utilities are required for this.

I interpret vishws's requirement as:

To be able to write to a DVD using CD Writer.
This I think is not possible.

Section 2.4.3 of the DVD FAQ says "CD-R burners can't read or write DVD discs of any kind":

With a CD writer...neither you write Data on DVD nor Video. If that could be possible....everyone of us would had started doing it, and there would be no need to buy a new DVD writer!!!

Because the CDR(W) drive lacks the possiblity to write higher density bits onto a DVD disc the information burned on it could not be read by any DVD player.

Furthermore I bet the CDRW couldn't make out what kind of disc he was having to burn because the recognition index on the DVD (telling the drive what kind of disc it was) could not be interepreted by the CD writer.

its completely and utterly impossible
the main difference from CDs to DVDs is that CDs has a bigger space between the lines in the spiral.
if you can imagine, a disk stores datain a spiral form, so its one long connected track
its read by a laser, while the cd is spun by a motor
a dvd works the excact same way, except the spiral is much longer now that its more tightly packed
a cd writer will not be able to write correct data on the disk, since its simply not precise enough

Manufactured disc - this contains bumps on the surface, and when those bumps are hit, the laser is reflected resulting in a 1. at all other times, 0

Burnt disc - when written the burner "burns" out areas making them non reflectable , so same reading mechanism

here in scotland a dvd writer is £35 and cd writer is £ 35 but the dvd will write cd's

you can still sell a cd writer for £ 15 or so leaving £20 or 40 euros floating

resellers now only sell cd writer for pirates copiers and as they adverise company copiers etc ...

Ok so u want to burn DVD's using CD-RW...

well as far i knw.. CD-RW write data into cd using laser, so when we are writing (buring) cds' it produce a ray with more energy (e=hf) to write data on to tracks..so called sectors.. but DVD's are highly dense compare to Cd's which can contain only 700 mbs so its impossible to write data on DVD using CD-RWs
