calculate encoder output frequency using 18F4520(programmin)

I have an optical encoder and the output waveform, I have to calculate the frequency using the PIC and show on the LCD. I know we can use the timer1 to check the changes within a certain time 't'. I don't konw how to program it...anyone can help? thank you...
