Can someone tell me what the different types of layers are for, I mean some of them are pretty obvious like Top Silk, but, Top Assembly, and Top Placement... what's the difference. I'm a little confused. Your help is appreciated.

top placement was used for documentation have part outside shape and pad ,that help assembly shop for pick & place
top assembly was also a documentation layer it same as above but may contain also reference designator like C1 ,U2 etc etc
but as it for documentation it may placed on center of the part for whit bigger font that silk

Top silk, silkscreen artwork sometimes referred to as Ident as well.
Top placement, placement courtyard (read up like IPC_7351) how close each component can be placed.
Top assembly, assembly drawings for component population....also can be used for outlines to pass via IDF interface to a mechanical package.
Not hard is it, and pretty basic to PCB design for as long as I can remember
