what does this warning message mean?

*WARNING* Atr: Failed to find 8-plane PseudoColor visual.

I type icds, this warning pops up and icds never starts!

has anyone else seen this?
 

ic 446 must work at 8bit or 24bit display ,you must
change you unix or linux display ,such as at linux
you should change XConfigure file .
