Hello,
We use Cadence PCB layout package at our company.....we lay out SMPS, and as such, the engineers need to view the layout copper and be able to highlight the nets, eg the ground net etc etc.

How can we do this?, is there a free Cadence viewer...or do we need to get the PCB guys to produce an ASCII output of the layout, which we can view in a "PCB viewer " program such as Valor.?

...they say the above offers a free cadence viewer, but I hear it will not open .BRD files?

try it out, there is a free Allegro viewer that opens *.brd files I use it, it is called Allegro free viewer I believe.
