Can anybody explain the basic concept of building statistical models? Kindly, elaborate it with some basic example.

thanx

This question is a little too general. Here is what you usually do. First of all, you have a data set, and then you either want to calculate some characteristic quantities like mean, std, ..., estimate some kind of parameters or you may want to fit a curve to extrapolate further conclusion.

There are quite a few software packages that might help you in this regard, like SSPS, STATA, SAS, .... I think SAS is the king in the category of statistics saftware, and it not only helps you build models but also helps you understand them. Practically, here in the US, I have not heard that someone uses SAS but doesn't have a job.

thanx steve 4 ur reply

but i want some basic level example like how mobile phone knows that I want to print 'hello' rather i press 4...3...5...5...6...0

Stat modelling is easy once you know the basic concepts.
To start with- there are two tyes of models in general- they are discrete models and contineous models. Most of the events can come under one of the basicmodels like bernoulli trials, binomial distribution, normal distribution, geometric distribution or may be even the hypo geometric distribution- and many more. once u get the problen in hand mapped to a model - the its easy.
there are many software tools to do modelling- the most childish one will be "minitab". "SAS" is powerful one but you have to program it- I personaly prefer SAS.
