What is the real difference between a buck converter and a chopper?

Find and read some book(s)about SMPS basics and you'll find out.

they are same thing

a chopper though really refers to any smps which chops the current...............

Choppers are dc - dc converters, on the basis of output voltage level they are classified as step down chopper (for output voltage less than input one) and step up chopper (for o/p voltage more than input voltage). A buck converter is a step down chopper with a LC filter at the output end in order to reduce the voltage ripples.
