Basic awareness about database

Can you give a basic awareness about access and sql database because Iam fresher in this field ? Also I want to know how a database work with an application software (I mean how a sftware connect to a database ) ? ,and also what is the difference between various database extensions for Eg: .mdb, .ldf ,.ldf ?

*.mdb associate with Microsoft Access database
*.mdf is SQL Database (Microsoft SQL Server)
*.ldf is SQL transactional log files (Microsoft SQL Server)

A database is used for all sorts of business or personal information.

SQL is a language to access database. Sql contains 2 language: DDL & DML. You connect into database via ODBC or Generic connection. Database can be used on personal or buisness application. There are many type of database free or shareware.

For free database for you can try firebird,Mysql,Postgress. I also used free database for building application.
