Arbitrary Patch design for 2.45/5.8 GHz antenna??

I would like to ask a basic question regarding Patch shapes. I have see alot of patch shapes (link below) at 2.45/5.8 GHz antennas i.e. E, rectangular. U. F. cross slots, triangular, square etc. I wanted to know if there is any mathematics involved behind the design of a particular patch shape at 2.45/5.8 GHz or one can design any arbitrary patch shape and then optimize its parameters to get the desired resonance at particular frequency (2.45/5
.8 GHz)?

When Bob Munson invented microstrip antenna in 1972 he made the shape rectangular. The reason that he chose this shape was because the antenna was part of an antenna array, and this shape allow for an easier estimation of the interaction between antennas.
Otherwise each microstrip antenna shape has pros and cons in terms of bandwidth, efficiency, polarization, etc.

So if I want to design let's say a F-Shape monopole patch antenna for 2.45/5.8 Ghz, what would be its dimensions then? feed width and length of the F-shape etc....
 

Anyone, Kindly provide me with a good book or research articles, if available, on monopole antenna designs helping me to come up with a novel design at multi-band frequencies [1-10 GHz]...
