I was reading about power system protection. I discovered that the algorithms predominantly used for determining over-current is Fourier transform. Just curious , why no other algorithms are used? in particular why not pll, that tracks the input?

Hi Garimella,
For Power systems , it is important to discriminate against decaying DC , harmonics and high frequencies. PLL cannot discriminate against decaying dc. Similarly advanced estimators such as kalman are computationally inefficient. I encourage you to look at the link https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7858890/ for more details
