Many people use hyperterminal to communicate with a microcontroller.
I’m not sure the results of what are you expecting to see, but if the microcontroller is programmed to send and receive ASCII characters you will see them on the Hyperterminal screen.

I always use the uart as output for my program monitor. If things don't get that far, it's output on a single port pin.

i am assuming you are interfacing 8051 serially using MAX232 with PC...so use hyper terminal
