how to do the noise analysis of vco. and what are the tools needed?

it's been a while since I did it, I think you need to run ac first then do phase-noise analysis. They had step by step of howto various devices like VCO LNA Mixer in spectreRF manual. You can also consult that as well.

Hi firewind, can you telll how to do it for VCO?Can you give me the document or send t he link?
THanks,
Ashish.

hi amarnath ,
can u please send me the paper which u have referred " ken kunderts paper on jitter analysis in freq sysnthesizers"

ADS means Advanced Design System, it is a simulator from Agilent.

ADS = Agilent Advanced Design System

For VCO noise analysis, I use spectre.
First run pss analysis and then pnoise analysis, you can get the phase noise plot of the VCO in dBc/Hz

Well it pretty much depends on the simulator you are using.

In ADS, you use the HB controller will a non linear noise and the pnmx will give you the phase noise.

Cheers

ADS from agilent is an excellent tool for designing passives and RF design. If your vco contains LC parasitics, you can simulate better in ADS for high frequencies

ADS is good and convenient, but i believe SpectreRF is more accurate.

Hi

I am using ADS.

Read Hajimiri paper regarding noise sources.

cheers
