Got information that the U.K. :

"Regardless of their manufacturer, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earbuds and laptops that are rechargeable via a wired cable, operating with a power delivery of up to 100 Watts, will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port."

Instead of implementing a real world mini-barrel plug for power and another smaller if preferred data pair cable.

True!
It is to break the monopoly the manufacturers of all those devices had on their chargers. Almost every gadget had a different connector and especially in the case of mobile phones, the user was tied to buying expensive chargers from the manufacturer. One manufacturer in particular seemed to change the power plug design on almost every phone they released, forcing buyers to go back to them for a new charger even for different versions of the same model.

USB-c isn't a bad choice because it is low profile and reversible.

Brian.
