A Microcontroller interface to Bluetooth Module

Hi guys, im just starting on a school exam project. Me and my group want to be able to control a garage door by bluetooth, i have looked many of the posts trough in here, but havent seem to find any really good.
I have some questions, im all new in this subjct, will it be smart to buy a R232 Bluetooth device, will it be easier to use and program with a microchip(PIC or AVR).
If anyone of you have some great resources for further reading plz post them
