What do the different suffixes in the 7400 range mean?

Wikipedia says that an "N" means a plastic, through-hole DIP package, but what does "AN" or "B1" mean?

I replaced a 74HC540AN with a 74HC540B1 and now the board doesn't run at all. I don't know if this death is a result of this change.
