Use some NE555 timer calculator. Simply there is lots of 555 calculators on Internet, just use Google. In calculators you can change RC values and look output. Also lots of calculators shows formulas.
The 555 was one of the most widely used ICs back in the day before micros were popular. THey have several applications as well. Like security alarms, proximity sensor, the list is endless, I reckon you check out this website
You could also take advantage of the hundred or so
pages' worth of product datasheet and app notes which
