42V automotive power bus not used because of arcing in switches?

Why did the 42V automotive system never get out there.?

Was it primarily because of arcing in switches and relays?
Surely that would have been the only real reason?...as you know, transmission busses are almost always high voltage, lower current.?
 

The higher voltage was selected to provide greater power capacity for wiring and devices on one hand, and to stay under the 50 volt limit used as a guideline for electric shock hazard. The European auto manufacturer Daimler-Benz proposed a 42V brand name for the conversion.

With two-three lead acid in serie you can start arc and weld, only using wires and welding stick rod. I try this and I can say this works, its not like TIG or REL but for welding in the field without welding device and mains power this is ok and can do the job for some repairing.

you mean the sparking from 42V car battery can weld metal?....

and you infer that this is not possible at 12V?
 

Yes even on 24V you can weld metal (two lead acid in serie). 12V is not enough to start and maintain arc.

Higher voltage system is economical question and it is not tech question. Complete world economy is in some chaos, and cars voltage system is on end for solving.

From what you say, i am beginning to wonder if the people who proposed the 42V auto system were a bunch of knowledge-less noob's?

i mean who'd want a system that arcs that badly?
 

No, they knows their jobs very well, but money for productions tools and developing and economical questions from markets plus some "expert" on top who make final decision...

In every current car from road you have lots of sources for dangerous situations, but manufacturer development teams make solutions for protection and safety.

Looking at this climate changes outside, if we are able to experience a little more time, we will have higher voltage system in cars for sure, probably with different car battery or some supercapacitor in combination with small battery or something similar.

i'd say make it 42 V, (or higher)....and only use signal relays to switch on/off FETs which replace the power relays....so you have fets instead of relays and no arcing.....isnt it that simple?.................routing high current around sounds like a bad idea.
