Why there is some blank area inside the antenna patch?

Hi, Gurus,
Attachment is one 77GHz patch antenna.
I am curious about why there is some blank area inside the antenna patch.
is it for the flatness peak for the antenna gain of the center area? Just guess.
Pls comment.

Actually if implement this U-shape slot in a patch antenna you don't get only a second radiation band, but multiple radiation bands.
Instead using (as usually) a single resonance patch element, if you are using a multi-band patch element, if put this element to form an antenna array, you don't get a multi-band array antenna. You get an array antenna hard to understand mathematically or practically.
Also this array will have big problems when try to do beam steering or to use in a Directional of Arrival system.
