This boost converter is simplified to depict basic operation.
a) While switch (or transistor) is closed it pulls increasing current through inductor.
b) When switch opens, inductor generates a pulse of sufficient voltage to push current to output stage.
The 1 ohm resistor is unnecessary. It's included to represent some amount of parasitic resistance.
