Washing machine motor control type(s) ?

If one were to build a replacement for the ordinary household washing machine motor. What kind of motor setup is one likely to encounter?, I suspect some kind of multi-phase controlled with IGBT or similar. But that may not be the whole story?

(The larger picture is to accomplish a replacement that can do things ordinary controllers just won't.)

I used a TRIAC controled throught a opto.

I think he meant an optoisolator that has a triac at its output... like MOC3052 which I have.
There are two main series of MOC ICs:

Random-Phase Optoisolator Triac Driver Output
Zero-Cross Optoisolator Triac Driver Output

I will like to ask the question here .....what kind of motor is generally used in washing machine ?....is it AC induction motor or stepper motor.....

Hi Teptar,

The block diagram is really nice....I have one more question.... As generally washing machine have two different mode of operation ...First one is spinning ( washing mode) and second one is Drying mode..... Now the washing mode the motor really rotated slow where as in drying mode it is really fast....also same motor is used for both purpose....I was very keen to know how this is implemented.....Can traic is the same control method for both operation or any thing else....If you can share some information on this will be really good and all we will be benifited by that....

The same motor is used for both operations, just speed is not the same. When centrifugal switch is turned on by washing machine controller some machine have speed 1200-1500, normal or standard is 800-900.
