This is a laser of approximately 200mW based on diode of DVD-RW recorder. Laser is strong enough to burn black plastic paper, etc.

Construction:
Diode was removed from Philips DVD-8631 recorder. It is powered from classic application of current source based on LM317. To protect the diode, a diode 1N4148 was antiparallel connected to it. In this project, lenses from an ordinary CD were used, but it is better to use a good collimator. The lens was glued to the heat sink of the diode with Epidian at such distance to provide convergent beam.

Elements used:
  • Philips 8631 recorder
  • LM317
  • resistors
  • diodes
  • heat sink
  • collimator (lens from a CD-ROM)
