This is an interfacing of PIC16F877A with a 2-wire serial lcd, this interfacing uses only 2 wires to display characters on lcds like 16x02 or 20x04.
This system consists of a shift register and it can be any type of 8-bit serial-in parallel-out shift register such as 74HC595, 74HC164, CD4094....
