boost converter schematic

Hello all,

Could you please help me to simulate this simple boost inverter design using Multisim: The original switch controller for my Power MOSFET is LM5022 (10 pins). But I cannot find this LM5022 in the library of the Multisim 8. That's why I used LM555 (8 pins) timer as a substitute.

And there my problem started. I tried to mix up the LM5022 with the LM555 and try to simulate in the Multisim. The Vout that I could get from the attached circuit is 10.857Vdc only. I played around but can't find the exact values of the different components with the duty ratio.

I want to convert the 12 Vdc, to 100Vdc using the boost converter design. And from there on I want to use Full bridge or Push Pull inverter to boost to 230Vac, 50Hz.

For those who already experienced in designing an inverter, may you please differentiate (if there is any) which is more appropriate or more feasible to use, Full Bridge or Push Pull inverter in terms of operation and efficiency. I think both of them needs 4 Power Mosfet to switch.

Thank you very much. Hope to hear from you all.

thanks,

joe

boost inverter

Your schematic has its parts spread apart too much and there are dots all over it.

The datasheet of a 555 shows that its output high voltage is 1.3V less than the supply voltage. It is high enough to drive a Mosfet that needs 10V.

It's in Multisim format I just copied to word document that's why dots are all over the place.

So it's too high to drive the Mosfet. Not possible.

I read a lot on your post on different threads. And you help us a lot.

Do you have any suggestion what is the best driver for a power mosfet in a boost inverter? I'm making my own design of inverter for a fuel cell (if possible high efficiency). I have a 50 Watt, 12 Vdc fuel cell. I want to step up to 100Vdc and then invert to 230 Vac, 50Hz.I want that my inverter must also protect the fuel cell from a reverse current. That's why I'm looking for an appropriate design of inverter.

One of the characteristics of a fuel cell to consider is - incapable of responding to instantaneous varying of load.

I tried LM5022 of national and made the computations for the driver. But I haven't simulated yet because Multisim8 does not have this IC.

And one thing more, I want to synchronize with a DC storage source (battery) served as a back up when load varies.

thanks,

joe

12vdc to 230vac inverter

Most Mosfets are spec's with a gate voltage of 10V. Their max allowed gate voltage is higher, maybe 20V.

Your Mosfet is spec'd with a gate voltage of 10V and its max allowed gate voltage is 40V.

Your Mosfet is tiny and has a high on-resistance. It might melt.

How about this type of Mosfet.

Is this feasible? and what type of driver will I use to drive this Mosfet?

thanks

Your new Mosfet has "VBRDSS (V) 20" (max drain-source voltage is 20V). But you want its output to go to at least 100V.

Yes Audioguru.

I found a mosfet driver controller in TI semicon. It's TPS40210. It has a wide input operating voltage from 4.5 to 52 V. and the maximum output voltage is 260 V.

The Mosfet that I need must have a voltage rating of more than 100V, isn't it?

There are some example designs on it. I'll based the computations to make an output of 100V for the converter.

Audioguru, is it feasible?

thanks,

100 watts inverter circuit 12vdc to 230vac

Hi Joe,
Are you making a little inverter?
Will its output be a square-wave, a modified sine-wave or a pure sine-wave?
You are using a lot of parts for only 50W. A 100W inverter costs only $20.00 or less if it is on sale.

It's just that I'm very fascinated doing some projects as my hobby and learning. I'm in transmission and distribution side of power engineering. And I want to add another skill on power electronics.

It's just a self fulfillment for me to make my own inverter to use in fuel cell instead of buying a ready made one. I just heard that fuel cell is one of the promising source of energy in the future. That's why I just keep on trying with this very simple design.

thanks

hello,

I'm just doing a 50W inverter. Try to search on the dialogue box on this thread about inverters and it will show you all the inverter topics in this forum.

Me too I'm still learning these things. But exciting.

cheers

50W is not much power from an inverter. You can buy one for $20.00 or less. Its wavform is a modified sine-wave.

A pure sine-wave inverter uses a complicated circuit.

Yeah I want to make a pure sine wave inverter. Could you please help me a circuit diagram for this?

thanks

best inverter design

A powerful Purer sine-wave inverter uses Pulse-Width-Modulation so it doesn't heat too much. But with an output of only 50W you need just a 60W audio amplifier driving a transformer. It will heat with only about 50W.

Yes, I'm making some notes on PWM (built in IC's). There is a control on the current and voltage.

But what type of audio amplifier (60W) should I use to drive a transformer? Isn't it that there are non transformer and transformer isolated topologies. What's better in this type of topology? What are their advantages?

convert dc to 230 vac

Philips (now called NXP Semiconductor) and ST Micro have many amplifier ICs for car radios. Some double the supply voltage for a high output power and can drive a power transformer connected in reverse. Negative feedback can be used to regulate the output voltage.

Thanks.

There are lots of students looking for design of inverters in this forum. And I'm one of them. You could all help by suggesting a simple electronic parts for these designs:

And one of the hardest thing to find is the drivers for MOSFET, TRANSISTORS, IGBT's, triacs, diacs....etc..

Could you please suggest a better driver that you have tried before for these following designs:

The design is from 12 Vdc to 230 Vac, 50 Hz, 100 Watts.

Boost Inverter (100 W)
** What type of driver --------------
** Type of MOSFET used -----------
** Application notes(optional) --
**Manufacturer ----

Push - Pull Inverter (100 W)
** What type of driver --------------
** Type of MOSFET used -----------
** Application notes(optional) --
**Manufacturer ----

Full Bridge Inverter (100 W)
** What type of driver --------------
** Type of MOSFET used -----------
** Application notes(optional) --
**Manufacturer ----

Assuming that the DC - DC converter output is 100 Vdc.

Just to clear it out, if the output voltage for the DC - DC converter is 100 Vdc, does the mosfet driver must also be rated more than 100 Vdc? How about the Mosfet, more than 100 Vdc too?

cheers to all.

lm555 boost converter

First you must decide on the output waveform of your inverter.
Then the circuit type will be obvious. A push-pull output is used with a square-wave and modified sine-wave type. A "DC-DC boost converter" is used with a high switching frequency PWM pure sine-wave inverter.

You need to decide on using transistors or Mosfets.
You need to decide on the switching frequency.
For a low mains frequency then a driver IC is not required. For a high switching frequency then a Moafet driver IC is usually used.

I can't suggest part numbers without knowing if you are down the street from me or if you are on the other side of Mars. 90% of the students who ask for a circuit here can't buy parts that are common here.
They buy parts that I have never seen at a "market". Their market doesn't have a descriptive web page.
