I need a 11/2 ohm- 8 amp resister for a welder . How do I recognise it by colors?

Resistors are not normally rated by current. Are you asking for a 1.5 Ohm resistor that will carry 8A?
If so, you need a 1.5 Ohm 96W type:
https://uk.farnell.com/w/c/passive-...-resistors?resistance=1.5ohm&st=resistor+100W

You might find it easier to use two 3 Ohm 50W resistors in parallel (across each other):
https://uk.farnell.com/w/c/passive-...unt-resistors?resistance=3ohm&st=resistor+50W

Note that you can use a resistor with HIGHER power rating but not one with lower than 96W rating.

Brian.

Hi,

confusing information:
11/2 could be 5.5 ... who knows.

But now you can do the calculation on your own ... according Brians post.

Klaus

Presume you aware now of the ambiguous specification and want to clarify it.

Rheostats are sometimes rated by maximum current rather than power. In any case, power resistors have rarely color codes.
