Looking for materials to design a NiMh battery charger

hello folks, I need to design a NiMh battery charger (AAA or AA - 2 cells), external supply powered @ 5V, that will be used in a professional product. I don't have much experience in designing stilo battery charger and i would like to know if anyone can link some schematic / application notes that shows/teach which is the best way to control the full battery state (temperature, current or voltage delta peak)...

Do I really need a Mcu for doing this? With an ADC ? Sigma Delta (better precision) or a 8-10 bit SAR is enough (for example for determining the delta peak) ?

I read in some forums that max712 is a little bit old and doesn't manage very well new NIMh chemistry...
 

Atmel and Microchip and probably others have application notes featuring NiMh, Li+ NiCd etc battery charging, with full source code for
the chips, and many different designs. Search their web sites, they are easy to find.

And when you find them, why don't you put a reply in here with all those links
to make a exhaustive cross-reference.:p

I think its the best way, allows you to personalize for your own wanted features.
