Need help with making a Half Adder or possible other types of adders

Hi, I was think about making a half or full adder (I'd make the half on first and if its not too hard I'll try the full), but I don't really know where to begin. I think I need a bread board but I don't know what type to buy or the types of gates to buy or even the type of wire to buy. I just make a ripper carry adder in a game called minecraft so I thought it would be fun to try and make a real adder (half/full/ripple carry). I know how it all works (the types of gates and whatnot) but I just don't know how to do it. :-( Could any of you point me in the right direction? I feel like this could become a great hobby for me.

you need 7486 (XOR IC) and 7400(AND IC). Find out the schematic whic you want to implement-that will tell you if you need more gates or not (Depends on the style of your implementation).

Also any size breadboard would work- you just have to figure out how many IC do you need and it should be big enough to fit them.
 
What is a good website to buy the gates from? Is this pretty much a schematic?

Look for Quad 2 input exclusive or gate and quad 2 input And gates in the list.

Okay, thanks! Also two more things. What do I do about getting the input? Are there switches that I can buy? Also what about power?
 

you can do either. Any 5 volt DC should work. either you can buy a battery or you can use a voltage regulator to get 5voltage supply available from your school or college lab. you can use just wires and connect when you wish to apply voltage to input. you may or may not use switches. it just makes your design fancier.
 
Would I just hook the battery up to the switches if I chose to use switches?
