can anyone help me out.. I want to make a PIC programmer which can work on laptop. I have a serial port on my laptop. So can anyone suggest me any kind of schematic or something...... I will be really thankfull

Hi,
my experience with laptop serial ports says that the such programming devices made for use with serial ports are mostly intended for desktop pc only and they are more likely not to work with laptop serial port. The reason is difference in the voltage level of serial ports in laptops and desktop Pc.
I made a famous multi pic programmer for serial port and it worked and is still working with desktop serial port but it never worked with a laptop.Laptops especially modern ones don't have a serial port, and a little older models have these ports but those are not capable of producing 13 volts required for pic programming.
A good choice for laptop based pic programmer is usb based programmers. PICkit2 And Pickit3 are available from microchip and they work for laptop usb without a doubt.
Further if you want to make one by yourself try Google and there are tonnes of pickit2 clones available. But to make a pickit2 clone you will need a basic serial or parallel port programmer to load the basic firmware in the master chip of the clone. That's at-least you will need to use a desktop once or may be some friend of you have a serial programmer to help you.

Dear Friend

Most of laptops serial port output below 12v that is why reason you can't do that
solution.... supply external 12v supply using external cct to your programmer

If your laptop has got a usb port, go for a pickit 2 clone to build ( but I would buy an original), you can use the stand alone programmer software, this would be a good investment for use with a deskptop also.

thanks for all those advices

Thank you sanjubluerock3 for the link.looks good and easy to use for zif programing.
Can this programmer be made with 18f4550, which is available to me and is half priced compared to 18f2550 which is not available at this time.
Both of the Mcu are said to be identical inside. will it be OK to use pin functions and not the pin numbers.

yes you can.... and why i like this pickit2 is you don't need extra wires and breadboard to program pics like other clones... thanks to palma for the design..

Hello, I'm PALMA, if anyone needs help with the design, I can help Regards
..Welcome Palma to EDA board. What more can we expect when we have the author of the file here. Your files are additionally good as i can see support for 30F series and EEproms too.
Ok..i would like to clarify one small thing from you. When 9, 10, 11 are open and 12 is ground, 29 is PGD and 30 is PGC 31 is Gnd and 32 is +5V which are used to 24xx eeproms. But when i used the programmer and Pickit2 programming software, the EEproms were shown as erased but how to verify it? Mean as 24xx is selected in the device list, and the software was showing chips earsed even when the command was given without the EEprom in the ZIF. Is this normal or some other settings are pending?
Cheers
