microcontrollers problem

Hi!
How do we significantly identify separately RAM,ROM and Micro-controller when they fix in a same circuit board?
Assume that the circuit some what old
i.e. the serial numbers, codes are erased which are mentioned on the above parts
 

You will be able to identify the microcontroller as it will have an oscillator or crystal attached. Do you have a photograph of the board in question?

the roms are usually small chips with few pins and use a plcc chip,
the rams have pins in 2 sides (not square) and usually have many pins because they need to have the address and data port.
If you have a square chip (bigger that the rom) it must be the mcu, you will also have connections from both ram and rom to that chip
and you will see other peripherals connected there too of input/output.
If you can at least describe what chips are on the board (package and pin count) maybe we can help further.

Older microcontrollers can be identified with crystal near it, but latest microcontrollers like AVR and some PIC have internal oscillators.

The best way is to study the circuit diagram and find it out.
 

You might see a ceramic DIP style chip (usually brown in colour) with a label on top hiding a window (unless it has fallen off). This would be a UV erasable EPROM which were common in older systems.
