You have to know that Riviera is just a HDL-editor. It doesnt have some modules like Design Flow, Code2Graphics, Block Editor or Testbench Generation but it has great assertion viewer, supports OVM UVM etc but you probably know it from Aldec's site ...
About performance - its definitely faster. I will give you just a one example. Ive made some project where I was filtering an image and I use co-simulation with Simulink. In Active 7.2 SE simulation takes about 40-50 minutes (but on netbook), in version 8.2 about 30-60 sec (i do not remember correct value) , and in Riviera about 5-10 sec.
