I'm sorry for this stupid question but I need to understand that. I googled it but coudn't find any response. For a nmos/pmos when we say source to common does this mean source to substate or source to gate ?
 

Assuming you mean "common source" it refers to using a transistor where the source connection is "common to both the input and output. A similar connection with bipolar transistors is common emitter. There are uses for "common base" amplifiers, for example, where the base is common and the signal is fed into the emitter.
