Using a mixer in order to make an RF pulse

Hi,
I want to use a mixer in order to make an RF pulse.I have read in some application notes that if I drive my pulse in the IF gate of the mixer I will manage to do it.Has anybody ever done this?If yes can he tell me more information about it?
